Lynchburg sets new record for ODAC Commissioners Cups rating

Hands lift up the 2017 ODAC women's soccer championship trophy

Forest, Va. -- Lynchburg College's athletic programs continued their rise to the top of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, gaining ground in this year's ODAC Commissioners Cups, the league announced Thursday.

The Hornets finished third in the standings but set a new record with their rating in the Dan Wooldridge Overall Champions Cup, checking in at .745 of a possible 1.0. Lynchburg's previous high was .714 in 2012.

The programs ranked second in the women's cup and third in the men's.

Lynchburg was bolstered this year by conference championship in women's outdoor track & field and a top regular-season finish in men's soccer.

Eight other women's programs -- basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and indoor track & field -- finished in the top three to bolster the program to second in the women's standings.

Men's cross country, and indoor and outdoor track & field all boasted top-three results to help the Hornets to third in that category.

Washington and Lee swept all three cups for the third-straight season, while Randolph-Macon edged LC for the second position. Both programs gained ground on the Generals, though, cutting W&L's advantage from .128 in 2016-17 to just .051 in this academic year.

The commissioners cups are calculated based on regular-season standings in team sports and championship team finishes in individual and meet sports. Those finishes are rated across each institution's sport sponsorship to come up with a decimal rating to determine the finish.

The 2017-18 year marks the third-straight that Lynchburg has finished in the top three in the overall ratings, and the women's rating of .821 is LC's highest in the 26-year history of the commissioners cups.
