Lynchburg Baseball Defeats Averett 8-6 in Comeback Fashion
DANVILLE, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team defeated Averett University 8-6 on Saturday in the first game of the season in non-conference play.
LC fell behind 6-0 by the third inning, but scored eight unanswered runs, including a four-run eighth inning. Sophomore James Womack earned the start on the mound for the Hornets before yielding to senior Robert Garrett who pitched six innings while giving up two hits, getting the win.
Down 6-2 in the top of the seventh inning, Paige doubled, plating Fitzpatrick and Nicholas again. During the eighth inning, facing a 6-4 deficit, Nicholas singled to bring home junior Dan Savage. Freshman Lincoln Evans scored off a fielder's choice before Shiflett doubled again, giving LC an 8-6 lead.
Garrett forced Averett into a three and out in the ninth inning, leading to Lynchburg's first win in 2012.
Cody Moore started the game for Averett (0-1), pitching six innings. Chris Moyer earned the loss.
Lynchburg (1-0) plays Greensboro College on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Leonard Park in Greensboro, NC.
