Hornet Baseball Defeats Southern Virginia 13-4
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team defeated Southern Virginia University on Tuesday afternoon, winning 13-4 in non-conference play.
Juniors Michael Del Buono and Dan Savage each had three RBI in the contest with fellow junior Brock Shiflett adding two RBI. Freshman Matt Outman got the start on the mound, pitching four innings, giving up five hits and one earned run.
Southern Virginia struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Lynchburg answered with a run in the bottom of the frame off a RBI-groundout from Shiflett.
Taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the second, SVU held the advantage until LC struck back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Del Buono singled in a run, while Savage, junior Michael Kenah and senior Richard Palase each tallied an RBI to give the Hornets a 5-2 edge.
SVU put up two runs in the top of the fifth, though with LC leading 5-4, the Hornets put up four runs in the bottom of the seventh and in the eighth, eventually winning 13-4.
Freshman Martin Henderlite pitched three innings, earning his first career win. Sophomore James Womack and freshman Reid Goss each pitched an inning in the game as well, only giving up a combined hit and no runs. The Hornet pitching staff relinquished only one walk on the day.
Barrett Price had two RBI to lead Southern Virginia (2-7). Tyler King pitched six innings, taking the loss.
Lynchburg (7-3/1-1 ODAC) heads to North Carolina Wesleyan College on Thursday for a 3 p.m. game.
