Lynchburg Baseball Splits With Washington & Lee
LYNCHBURG, VA – In the final regular season games of the year, the Lynchburg College baseball team split with Washington & Lee University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon. Lynchburg won the first game 5-3, before falling in the second 14-7.
Senior Robert Garrett took the mound for the last time on Fox Field after LC honored its three seniors with a pre-game ceremony. Garrett picked up the win while allowing only two runs and six hits and striking out seven.
Lynchburg began the day with one run in the bottom of the first off a sacrifice fly from junior Brock Shiflett. Washington & Lee knotted the game up at one in the top of the fourth, but the Hornets responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Junior Michael Kenah doubled down the right field line before Shiflett doubled to score Kenah, giving LC a 3-1 lead. With a Hornet run in the bottom of the sixth to push the advantage to 4-1, the Generals added a run in the top of the seventh.
Shiflett singled in the bottom of the eighth for a 5-2 lead for the Hornets, though W&L threatened in the top of the ninth. After the Generals tallied a run, freshman Brandon Miller shut down the opposition, picking up his fourth save of the year.
In the second game, Washington & Lee came out swinging with a combined nine runs in the first three innings. After a score in the top of the fifth, LC was down by 10 but started to come back, plating six in the bottom of the frame.
W&L kept the Hornets at bay with four more runs in the game, though LC added a run in the eighth off a bases-loaded walk from Kenah. The Generals finished off the game with a 14-7 victory.
Alex Mait had five RBI while Jonathan Stutts contributed three for Washington & Lee (15-19/8-10). Eric Wisotsky picked up the win.
Lynchburg finishes the regular season with a 30-8 overall record and a 14-4 record in the ODAC which places them in the number one seed for the upcoming conference tournament. More details on the ODAC Tournament will be released when available.
