Q&A With Hornet of the Week Robert Garrett

The Lynchburg College athletic department each week showcases a question and answer feature with our Hornet of the Week. The thirtieth student-athlete in this series is baseball senior pitcher Robert Garrett.

Garrett pitched two complete games in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament last week including the championship game. He gave up only five hits and one run in the final game while striking out five. For the season he is 8-0 with a 2.64 ERA. Lynchburg won the ODAC Championship on Sunday for the first time since 1990.

Why did you choose Lynchburg College?
I chose Lynchburg College because both of my parents are alumni and I really wanted to play baseball at a school that had a very competitive and well known program and I felt like Lynchburg College was the best place for me to go.

What was it like to throw two complete games in the ODAC Tournament?
I really can't describe the feelings that I had after throwing both complete games. I was surprised after I threw the first one because my longest outing of the year had been only seven innings and I knew once we got into the tournament that pitching was going to be key. All I was trying to do both games was give my team a chance to win the games and win the tournament, and it just happened that I had enough stamina to throw both complete games. The second one was really surprising because I didn't know how much I had left in my arm coming back off two days rest, but it's really just an amazing feeling.

What is your favorite moment thus far as a Hornet?
It would definitely have to be winning the ODAC Championship on Sunday. I've played in this program for four years and we've had a ton of teams get so close to winning it, but actually winning it and moving on to regionals has to be by far the best moment I have ever had playing baseball here at Lynchburg College. It's such a great feeling knowing that all the hard work we've put in day in and day out has payed off and that we can say we're ODAC Champs.

What do you like most about LC Baseball?
The best part about this program is how close we all are with one another. I mean we play 40+ games each year and we spend so much time with one another you'd think we'd get tired of everyone, but this team is like a family, and the coaching staff has done a great job with making sure we all look out for one another. It's one big family on and off the field and that is a huge part in why we are so successful each year because we play for each other, not just for ourselves, we have a very big team first mentality, it's awesome.
