LC Alum Lucas Jones Tabbed PHCC Head Baseball Coach

MARTINSVILLE, VA - Patrick Henry Community College's new head baseball coach is hoping to create a family atmosphere at PHCC while raising one of his own.

When Lucas Jones weighed the opportunity of leaving his position as full-time assistant coach at George Mason University to become PHCC's newest athletic hire, his hesitation didn't center on doubts about the job offer in Martinsville.

Instead, the doubt centered on how his wife, who is expecting their first child, would react to a new hometown she had never visited.

"Walking away from (my job interview) here, I knew instantly that this was the place for me, just from the sense of community," said Jones. "The challenging part was my wife didn't get to come with me, because we're expecting a little one literally any day now. So she couldn't travel, which meant it was kind of me making the decision for the whole family. That was more pressure than actually deciding if I wanted to take the job or not."

But after describing his visit to Martinsville, the people he met and PHCC's National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) program, his wife, Karla, gave the move her blessing, sight unseen.

"Everybody looked you in the eye, asked how your day was going, and I appreciate that," the Lynchburg native said of his visit for the job interview. "It's more small-town living, which I certainly enjoy, and I just liked the positive vibe I had walking away from here. … Was it a good move for the family? We felt like it was at the end of the day."

Jones will bring a wealth of collegiate playing and coaching experience to the Patriots program, especially considering he's only 30 years old. A first-team all-American, academic all-American and three-year starter at Lynchburg College, he hit .426 in 121 career games (all starts). After graduating in 2005 with a degree in communications, he took scarcely two months off before enrolling at VCU to pursue a master's in sports administration.
