Around the Horn

The Hornets and Jumbos traded blows between the 3rd and 8th innings but as the bottom of the 9th rolled around, Lynchburg found itself down by one. The Hornet batters were patient at the plate and were able to string together successful at bats to score one run but were down to their final out with the winning run 90 feet away. Sophomore Griffin Wild was down to his last strike before he hit a fly ball that ended up dropping in to score the winning run to help the Hornets upset the #10 Tufts Jumbos.

Game Breakdown

- The Hornets took an early lead after senior Ryan Katona hit a slicing ball into right center which the Tufts center fielder misplayed, giving Katona a triple with an RBI as sophomore Thomas Powell came all the way around to score from first

- Lynchburg extended their lead to three after senior Will Hylton drove in junior Matthew Cotton and Wild on a single through the right side

- The Jumbos answered back with three runs in the next half inning, including a two-run homerun

- Powell drove in Wild and junior Nathan Sharp in the bottom of the 6th, drawing his team to within one run

- Tufts would take their first lead of the game in the top of the 7th, scoring three to go up by one

- Lynchburg knotted it back up after junior Luke Rodgers sent a ball back up the middle, bringing in Hylton

- The Jumbos answered back, regaining the lead with a run in the top of the 8th

- Both teams went scoreless as the Hornets were down to their last three outs in the bottom of the 9th

- Hylton doubled down the left field line to start the inning and junior Will Harris snuck a ball through the left side to bring him home

- Following a double play, the Hornets had the winning run on third but were down to their last out

- Wild battled but found himself down 1-2; he hit a fly ball to center but the Tufts center fielder back-pedaled too far and could not recover as the ball landed in front of him and because of the two outs, Harris was running no matter what and crossed the plate to finish off the comeback rally
