Around the Horn

Lynchburg Baseball honored head coach Percy Abell for 20 years of service Friday afternoon vs. Piedmont. The Hornets were swept by the Lions in a doubleheader 5-0 and 5-1.

Game 1 Breakdown

- Piedmont and Lynchburg were scoreless till the third inning when Piedmont brought home one run

- The Hornets missed their chance to score in the bottom half of the inning when the Lions pitcher walked two batters before leaving two runners left on base

- The Lions put up one more run in the fourth inning to make it 2-0

- Three more Piedmont runs came in the sixth inning to secure a 5-1 victory over the Hornets

- Sophomore Ryan Irby had a solid outing for the Hornets, pitching five complete innings while sophomore Matthew Kane came in for relief

Game 2 Breakdown

- Senior Zack Engelmann went seven strong innings on the mound for Lynchburg, only allowing two runs before a two hour weather delay took him off the mound

- In the third inning, Piedmont took a 1-0 lead off an RBI single

- A RBI double in the in the sixth inning would put the Lions up 2-0

- Lynchburg would answer back in the seventh inning when freshman Christopher Crouch reached on a fielding error by the Lion shortstop to bring home junior Matt Ward

- Piedmont would add three insurance runs in the ninth inning to win 5-1

- Ward led the Hornets with three hits in the game
