Greensboro, N.C. -- The Lynchburg College baseball team's ninth-inning rally fell short, and the Hornets dropped a 7-4 decision at Guilford Saturday afternoon in both teams' Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener.

Senior first baseman Matt Ward (Newton, N.C.) went 3-for-4, outfielders Shawn Allen (Columbus, N.J.) and Will Harris (Halifax, Va.) each had two hits, and senior center fielder Brad Hylton (Danville, Va.) drove in a pair of runs for LC.

The Hornets out-hit Guilford, 9-7, and drew seven walks, but LC couldn't capitalize, leaving 12 baserunners stranded.

Final: Guilford 7, Lynchburg 4

Records: Guilford (4-4-1, 1-0 ODAC), Lynchburg (5-3, 0-1 ODAC)

Venue: Edgar McBane Field, Guilford College, Greensboro, N.C.

- Both teams plated a run in the first inning, Lynchburg drawing first blood with Harris' RBI single, but the bats fell silent for the next few frames. The Hornets retook the lead when Hylton drew a one-out walk with the bases loaded in the fifth. Lynchburg left three men aboard, though, with a popup and a strikeout.

- Hornets left-hander Matt Kane (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) cruised through the second, third, and fourth innings without allowing a baserunner, but the junior couldn't get out of the fifth. Guilford pushed across three runs in the inning, two on Rocco Wilcox's two-out single.

- Guilford added insurance with single runs in the next three innings.

- Lynchburg showed signs of hope, picking up a run on a wild pitch in the seventh and loading the bases in the ninth. Hylton delivered an RBI single to left with no outs in the final frame, but Guilford reliever Bailey Garfield induced a strikeout and a game-ending double play to seal the game.

The two teams will meet Sunday on Lynchburg's Fox Field for the second installment of the weekend's home-and-home series starting at 1 p.m.
