Baseball gears up for ODAC tournament play

Baseball players face the flag for the playing of the national anthem before a game.

Lynchburg, Va. -- For the first time since the 2014 season, the Lynchburg College baseball team will take part in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. The Hornets take the No. 6 seed into the first weekend of tournament play, heading to Salem, Va., to face off with No. 3-seeded and nationally ranked Roanoke.

The teams will start the best-of-three series with a doubleheader at Salem Memorial Ballpark on Friday, May 4 beginning at 5 p.m. If necessary, they will meet again Sunday, May 6 at 2 p.m. to decide the first-round series. (Please note the time change on the "if necessary" game; schedule has shifted due to rain in the forecast.)

The 2018 season marks the first with a new tournament format for the ODAC as the league moves from six- to eight-team field for the conference tournament. It is now a two-weekend ordeal with best-of-three series at high-seeds' home sites for the first round; the four series winners will meet the following weekend at Lynchburg City Stadium to determine the league champion in a double-elimination format.

Lynchburg (16-22, 9-11 ODAC) is in search of the program's ninth ODAC title and its first since the 2012 season. Last season, sixth-seeded Roanoke took the tournament crown and advanced all the way to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.

The Maroons, ranked 13th in Division III at the moment, have parlayed that success into a 27-9, 15-5 mark this season. Roanoke swept the season series with LC, winning 10-1 in Lynchburg March 15 and 8-4 in Salem April 5.

Admission is free for this weekend's series.

The rest of the tournament will be spread throughout the Commonwealth, starting with eighth-seeded Bridgewater and top seed Randolph-Macon in Ashland, Va. No. 5-seeded Hampden-Sydney will travel to Winchester, Va., to meet with fourth-seeded Shenandoah, and No. 7-seed Guilford will head to Virginia Beach, Va., to square off with Virginia Wesleyan, the No. 2 seed.
