Nelson's Second Half Surge Powers Hornets 4-0

LYNCHBURG, VA – Senior Ashley Nelson scored two goals in less than a minute to help the Lynchburg College field hockey team defeat Shenandoah University 4-0 on Saturday.  The LC senior day festivities saw the team keep its perfect Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) record over the past four years.

Lynchburg controlled play early on, possessing the ball on the offensive end for the much of the first half.  Shenandoah goalkeeper Sarah Clare made a couple of sprawling saves in the half to keep LC off the scoreboard.  However, Lynchburg earned seven penalty corners in the half, and the pressure would prove to be overwhelming.  On the sixth corner, substitute Kelsey Link sent the insert to Lindsay Leonard, who scored her fifth goal of the year with a rocket at 20:06.

LC would not wait as long in the second half, earning another penalty corner less than two minutes in.  Link sent the insert to Nicole Marburger, who took the shot.  Nelson deflected it in the back of the cage.  Less than 30 seconds later, Nelson collected her own rebound off of a save by Clare and score her second of the game to give Lynchburg the 3-0 lead.

Marburger would score off of another penalty corner off a feed from Link with five minutes left to give LC the 4-0 lead.

Lynchburg dominated the shot and corner totals, winning them 44-0 and 14-0 respectively.  Hannah Myers and Jordan A. Seeley combined for the shutout.

Clare led SU (5-4 overall, 0-1 ODAC) by stopping 21 shots on the day.

Lynchburg (6-2, 2-0) will head to Harrisonburg, VA on Wednesday as they take on ODAC rival Eastern Mennonite University.  Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
