Hornets Wrap up Regular Season Title with 3-0 Win over Marlins
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Lynchburg College field hockey team clinched the first seed in the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament with a 3-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan College. It is the fourth straight year the Hornets enter as the number-one seed.
LC pressured the Marlins right from the beginning, firing six shots compared to only one for VWC in the first 12 minutes. The Hornets finally broke through at 12:42 with Kelli Williams firing a shot past Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper Kirsten Olsen to take the lead.
Lynchburg continued to swarm the Marlin goal the rest of the half, forcing Olsen to make seven saves. However, the score remained 1-0 at the intermission.
The second stanza remained the same as the first, with LC getting all of the early chances. Continuing on the similar theme, Lindsay Leonard scored an unassisted goal in the 13th minute of the period, to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead. Lynchburg kept firing on the opposition, until Leonard put home the final tally of the night at 60:36.
Olsen led VWC (3-12 overall, 1-7 ODAC), stopping 14 shots on the night. LC outshot Virginia Wesleyan 30-5 and earned seven more penalty corners as well. Jordan A. Seeley got her second start of the season in goal and made three saves in the shutout.
The Hornets (14-3, 7-0) will finish the regular season on Thursday. They will make the short trip to Sweet Briar College with a 4:30 p.m. start time.
