"Seventh Heaven": Hornets Bring Home ODAC Title, All-ODAC Tourney Team Announced
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College field hockey team entered the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship game against Randolph-Macon having already won six straight conference titles. They added a seventh with a 3-0 victory over the Yellow Jackets on Saturday night.
Lynchburg already played Randolph-Macon once this season, defeating the Yellow Jackets 2-0 on the road for the Macon's only conference loss. Tonight the Hornets did not let Randolph-Macon stay around long, taking a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Senior co-captain Lindsay Leonard started the scoring eleven minutes into the match by taking a pass from fellow senior co-captain Shelly Milks. Leonard sent the game-winner past keeper Nicole Woodworth for the early 1-0 lead.
A barrage of shots for the Hornets in the offensive zone set up the second goal 25 minutes in. Leonard took a shot that Woodworth saved off her pads. The ball found its way onto the stick of junior Kelli Williams who finished off the ball for LC's second goal.
The first half ended with a penalty corner and one more opportunity for the Hornets. Sophomore Kelsey Link took the corner and sent it in to junior Nicole Marburger who ripped a shot that found its way into the back of the cage, giving LC a 3-0 halftime lead.
Hannah Myers made five saves for the Hornets (17-3).
Woodworth made 26 saves for the Yellow Jackets (10-10). Olivia Newman added a defensive save for the visitors.
