Kelsey Link Nets Three as Hornet FH Defeats EMU 6-1
LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior Kelsey Link had a hat trick to lead the Lynchburg College field hockey team to a 6-1 victory over Eastern Mennonite University Wednesday evening in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match. The Hornets finish the ODAC regular season with an 8-0 record.
Link opened the scoring 7:22 into the contest, tapping in a rebound off her own shot to put LC up 1-0. The Royals answered 10 minutes later, as Carol Brinkley found the back of the cage with an assist from Jenessa Derstine. Lynchburg's Katie Kline made the score 2-1 on a feed from Taylor Quillen and the Hornets took that advantage into intermission.
Link struck again just five minutes after the break, and secured the hat trick at the 48-minute mark with another unassisted goal. Megan McAnally added an insurance goal from Catherine Rogerson with eight minutes left on the clock and Danielle Kreider scored from Alyssa Mills in the closing minutes.
LC outshot its guests 31-4 and held an 11-2 edge in penalty corners. Mary Beth Danaher made 14 saves in the cage for EMU.
Lynchburg finishes the regular season 14-4 overall record, while EMU falls to 4-14 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
The Hornets, winners of the last seven conference titles, enter the six-team 2013 ODAC Tournament as the #1 seed with home-field advantage throughout the tournament and a first-round bye. They will host a semifinal game Wednesday at a time to be determined against the winner of the #4 Bridgewater and #5 Eastern Mennonite first-round matchup.
