Hornets Fall 1-0 in NCAA First Round to Centre
LYNCHBURG, VA – The 20th-ranked Lynchburg College field hockey team outshot Centre College 14-1 in the first half, but allowed a goal late in the match to fall 1-0 in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Field Hockey National Tournament.
Lynchburg had multiple opportunities in the first half, keeping the ball on the Centre side of the field throughout the first 35 minutes.
Centre had a good scoring chance with 14 seconds left in the first period but Julia Gates' shot was turned away by Jordan Seeley.
The efficient shooting continued for the Colonels as they had eight more shots in the second half, four that were saved, and one that found the back of the cage.
That goal came at 56:15 off the stick of Gates. After several penalty corners which resulted in scoring opportunities for Centre, the visitors managed to maintain possession off a penalty corner for a solid minute before Chelsea Klein stroked a ball towards the cage. Gates was five yards in front of Seeley to deflect the ball for the game-winning tally.
Centre turned away 16 Lynchburg penalty corners in the contest to capture the first NCAA victory in program history.
Lynchburg finished with a 23-9 advantage in shots and 16-5 in corners.
Kirby Roberts made six saves in goal for Centre while Seeley turned away five for the Hornets.
Lynchburg's season ends at 16-5 while Centre (16-4) moves on to face the nation's #4 seed, Christopher Newport University (19-1), this weekend in the round of 16.
