No. 17 Mary Washington hands field hockey first loss

Lynchburg, Va. -- Lynchburg College's field hockey team suffered its first loss of the 2017 season, falling 6-0 to No. 17 Mary Washington Saturday afternoon on Shellenberger Field.

Tappe Grotos (Richmond, Va.) led the Hornets with a pair of shots-on-goal, and Hannah Chapman (Albury, Australia) made five saves in the first 15 minutes in the LC goal.

Erin Kaila led the Eagles with a goal and two assists, and Allegra Massey-Elim scored twice for UMW.

Final: Mary Washington 6, Lynchburg 0

Records: Mary Washington 5-1, Lynchburg 5-1

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Eagles jumped on top early when Lauren Hopkins scored on a breakaway, and Lexie Dixson added another UMW goal to send the Eagles into halftime with a 2-0 lead as Lynchburg couldn't capitalize on 7 minutes of man-up play.

- UMW added four more scores after halftime. It could have been more, but reserve goalie Laurel Nicks (Yorktown, Va.) made four saves, and freshman Baylee Mueller (New Albany, Ohio) chipped in a defensive save for LC.

- The Eagles out-shot Lynchburg, 19-9 in the game.

 

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg will look to defend home turf again next weekend, starting on Friday, Sept. 22 with a 5 p.m. game against York (Pa.) on Shellenberger Field.
