Union, N.J. -- University of Lynchburg's field hockey team wasn't quite able to break through with the game-tying goal late in the Hornets' 3-2 loss at Kean Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Jackie Lerro (Royersford, Pa.) assisted both of the Lynchburg goals on the afternoon, seeking out senior forward Nikki Simpao (Stafford, Va.) for a first-half score and senior forward Isabella Eldridge (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) after intermission.
Sophomore defender Hayden Shockley (Milford, Del.) made her third defensive save of the season in the game.
Final: Kean 3, Lynchburg 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
Lynchburg got off to a hot start as Lerro's pass found Simpao at the top of the arc in the third minute. The senior finished to give Lynchburg an early 1-0 lead.
Kean fought back to tie the game in the 11th minute thanks to a Jenna Petrone goal, and the Cougars took a 2-1 lead into half after Melissa Way scored with just 2:53 left in the period.
The Cougars increased their lead out of the break as Brenna Delbagno deflected a ball into the cage following a Kean penalty corner in the 41st minute. Lynchburg counter-punched 13 seconds later when Lerro found Eldridge just in front of the goal to make it a 3-2 game.
Kean's defense thwarted several opportunities down the stretch to preserve the one-goal victory.
Lynchburg returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 26 at Liberty University's Field Hockey Complex, where the Hornets will play host to Roanoke in both teams' Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener. First whistle blows at 7 p.m.
