Lynchburg Men's Basketball Falls to Hampden-Sydney in ODAC Quarterfinals
SALEM, VA – With help from a large first half run, the fourth-seeded Hampden-Sydney College men's basketball team defeated fifth-seeded Lynchburg College 82-60 in the quarterfinal matchup of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament on Friday afternoon.
All-ODAC Third Team selection junior Austin Chillemi led the Hornets with 15 points and seven rebounds while senior Tucker Lucas added 14 points and six rebounds in his final game in a Lynchburg uniform. Lucas also had one steal and one block in the game.
Hampden-Sydney jumped out early after Lynchburg took an initial 4-2 lead at the 18:28 mark when Chillemi nailed a layup. The Tigers went on a 12-0 run over the next six minutes, leading 14-4 at with 13:11 remaining in the half. Lynchburg narrowed Hampden-Sydney's lead to 34-25 with 2:15 left after a couple of made free throws from sophomore Manny Hernandez. However, HSC closed out the half leading 47-28.
In the second half, Lynchburg got within 10 at the 13:39 mark after two consecutive makes from junior Michael Wims. The Tigers though, took control for the remainder of the period, eventually winning 82-60.
Ru White led Hampden-Sydney (19-7) with 15 points, while Ben Jessee made four three-pointers en route to 14 total points. For the game, the Tigers shot 51.7% while limiting Lynchburg to a shooting percentage of 27.7%
Lynchburg finished the season with a 15-11 overall record and a conference mark of 9-7. The 2011-12 campaign was the first season since 1986 that the Hornets finished with an overall record over .500, while the team notched 15 wins for the first time since 1981.
