Manny Hernandez Hits Late Three-Pointer to Lift LC Men to Manhattanville Tourney Title
PURCAHSE, NY – Junior swingman Manny Hernandez drilled a three-point basket with 19 seconds left in the game Saturday to give the Lynchburg College men's basketball team an 81-79 victory over Manhattanville College in the title game of the AJ Buchanan Classic.
The Hornets led by one at intermission and opened a 12-point lead at 53-41 after just five minutes of second-half action. The Valiants quickly rallied and re-took the advantage, and the lead changed hands several times down the stretch.
Manhattanville's Colin Campbell made a layup with 36 ticks left on the clock to put MC ahead 79-78 to set up Hernandez's game winning bucket. The Valiants missed a jump shot with two seconds left to try and force overtime.
Hernandez led all scorers with 22 points, hitting 6-of-12 attempts from beyond the three-point arc, and also added six rebounds. Junior forward Gary Boone II posted 15 points and seven rebounds while junior guard Xavier Parham had 11 points and four steals. Freshman forward Alex Graves was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor and finished with 10 points and six caroms. LC shot 53 percent from the field (32-61) and 41 percent from three-point range (9-22). LC also held a large rebounding (33-23) edge.
Hernandez was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and senior forward Michael Wims also was selected for the all-tournament team.
Jack Bramswig led five Manhattanville (5-3) scorers in double figures with 17 and snared a game-high nine boards. Anthony Maestre had 15 points and Campbell finished with 13.
The Hornets (7-2) have 10 days off for finals week before traveling to Ferrum College to play the Panthers Tuesday, December 18 at 4 p.m.
