Hampden-Sydney Finishes Strong, Does Away with Hornets, 81-70
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The Lynchburg College men's basketball team managed to keep Wednesday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game within single digits for most of the second half, but the Hampden-Sydney Tigers were too much as the Hornets fell, 81-70, ending a five-game winning streak.
LC took it to the home team early, taking an early 6-0 lead on three-pointers by senior Michael Wims and junior Manny Hernandez. Greg Lewis answered for Hampden-Sydney with two trifectas of his own to knot the game.
Lynchburg pulled ahead one more time, taking its largest lead of the game, 23-16, with 10 minutes remaining in the first half on a layup by senior Brandan Connor.
The Tiger trio of Lewis, Harrison George, and Khobi Williamson combined for 26 of their team's 29 remaining points following the LC lead to control the game, 45-37, at the half.
The Hornets managed to get the game within two points, 49-47, less than five minutes into the second session on a jumper by junior Gary Boone II.
Hampden-Sydney would score the next seven points of the game and Lynchburg would get no closer than four the rest of the way.
Lynchburg (16-4/7-4) was led by Hernandez's 20 points while senior Austin Chillemi added 18 points and a team-high six boards. Boone II and Wims rounded out the scorers in double-figures with 10 points each.
Hampden-Sydney (18-2/10-1) were paced by 24 points from Lewis on 8-of-12 from three-point range to tie the school record for threes in a game. Williamson poured in 18 points and a game-high nine boards while George equaled the output with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Lynchburg hosts Randolph-Macon College (11-8/6-4) on Saturday for a 2 p.m. ODAC start.
