Manny Hernandez Three-Pointer Gives LC Men 63-61 win over Roanoke
LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior swingman Manny Hernandez drilled a three-pointer with 12 seconds on the game clock to give the Lynchburg College men's basketball team a come-from-behind 63-61 victory over visiting Roanoke College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game Wednesday evening.
The Maroons defense forced LC into just 21 percent shooting in the first half en route to a 37-27 halftime advantage. RC had led by as many as 15, but three late baskets put the Hornets back within striking distance.
Roanoke held a 46-33 lead at the 15:32 mark after back-to-back three pointers before the LC offense got rolling. Freshman Austen Arnold and Hernandez scored five points each to fuel a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to pull within one. The score remained tight down the stretch, with Roanoke ahead 59-55 with 2:48 left. Senior guard Brandan Connor scored on a jumper and then stole the ball and hit two free throws to tie the game at 59 all. Andrew Daniels scored on a layup to give RC the lead again with 1:50 to play, but it would be the last points the visitors would score. After an LC free throw, Roanoke missed a jumper on its end to set up the final LC possession.
After a Hornet timeout with 28 seconds left trailing by one, LC worked the ball around as the shot clock wound down. Hernandez dribbled right and pulled up for a deep three with a Roanoke defender contesting the shot, but it hit nothing but net to give LC a two-point edge. A tough Maroon jumper to tie the game in the closing seconds went wide and senior center Austin Chillemi corralled the rebound to seal the win.
Hernandez and Chillemi tied with for the game-high with 13 points each, and Chillemi added six rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior Michael Wims added 10 points and Arnold finished with nine points and four boards. Connor contributed six points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Daniel Eacho tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds for Roanoke (8-14/1-12 ODAC), while Julian Ramirez had 11 points and five steals. Kwasi Amponsah and Andrew Daniels each had 10.
The Hornets (17-5/8-5 ODAC) travel to Emory & Henry College Saturday for another ODAC matchup at 4 p.m.
