Hernandez Named Tournament MVP as Hornets win Championship, 87-69

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Lynchburg College men's basketball team continued to play with a spark in the championship game of the Gallaudet University Holiday Tournament, downing Gallaudet, 87-69, on Saturday night.

The Hornets maintained a 46-36 advantage at halftime, shooting 50 percent from the field. Similar to the first round game on Friday, the Hornets would pull away in the second half.

The Bison fought Lynchburg on every possession to start the final 20 minutes of play, getting the game within single digits, 62-54, on a Joshua McGriff layup with 10:28 left.

Manny Hernandez, the MVP of the tournament, answered with a 3-pointer before Harry West drove the lane for a layup, extending the advantage back to 67-54.

Lynchburg would utilize a 60 percent second-half shooting percentage to continue to pull away down the stretch.

Hernandez led all scorers with 23 points, while Zack Burnett added 14 points and four assists. For his performance, Burnett was named to the all-tournament team.

Omar Kemp contributed a career-high 12 points to go along with eight points and five steals from Lyndon White.

Orion Palmer led Gallaudet (1-6) with 19 points and a game-high eight assists. McGriff and Trey Gordon added 15 and 14 points respectively.

After a lengthy layoff for the Hornets, Lynchburg (6-2) plays Baruch College (NY) (5-2) in the Hampden-Sydney Holiday Classic December 29 at 2 p.m.
