Men's Lacrosse Alumni Game Preview

Men's Lacrosse Alumni Game Preview

By Max Silberlicht, assistant men's lacrosse coach

Friday night, 33 Lynchburg Lacrosse Alumni will gather together in a pre-game huddle to take on the Lynchburg College Men's Lacrosse Team on Shellenberger Field.

It is these 33 alums and their teammates that have molded this program to its current standing in the Division III lacrosse world.  That standing includes; 288-206 record since the inception of the program in 1980, a 165-78 record since 1997, 117 All-ODAC selections, 25 participants in the North/South Senior All-Star game, 40 All-Americans, six Scholar All-Americans, and five NCAA tournament appearances.  Lynchburg has even been represented in the World games, the 2011 Bowhunters Cup, and in Major League Lacrosse.

It is this "family" that has elevated Lynchburg Lacrosse to being annually ranked in the Top 20 for the past 10 years.  During these ten years, an ODAC playoff system has been in place, and Lynchburg has played in seven of the 10 Championship games, winning three ODAC titles, in 2003, 2005, and 2008.  They will look to add a league leading fourth title to the resume come the spring of 2012.

The roster for the 2011 Alumni Team is made up of players ranging from 1986 to 2011 graduating years.  Bill Washington '86 will be an intricate part of the Alumni defense, by bringing his groundball ability from 1985 to the defensive end.  He will be joined by Ryan Johnson '03, and Brandon Fell'07, forming a defense with a total six All-ODAC selections and two 3rd team All-Americans.  They will be playing in front of goaltender, Kurt Peter '09.

It is the depth at the defensive position that will make the Alumni tough.  Off the bench the Alums have Chris Perzinski '08 who was the anchor of the last Lynchburg defense to win an ODAC title, and garners a 1st team All-ODAC honor along with a 3rd team All-American selection his senior year.  Alongside him are teammates, David Kaye '03 and Scott Link '03. Both were senior leaders from the team that won the first ODAC title for Lynchburg in 2003.

The defensive unit is rounded out with youth.  Jeff Eggeling '09, a 2nd team All ODAC selection, and Bob McGrath '09 will represent a 2009 defense that caused 141 turnovers. The 2010 class will be represented by Scott Lemen '10, who will bring his two goals and one assist from senior year to the field, alongside fellow senior, Shane Roscher '10.  Roscher '10 brings his Honorable Mention All-American selection along with two First team All-ODAC selections back to Shellenberger field.  The young guns will be rounded out by 2011 graduate, Pat Luckhurst '11, fresh off his senior year campaign, garnering an Honorable Mention All-ODAC selection last spring.

In the midfield, the Alums will be led by four seniors from the 2008 ODAC Championship team, arguably the most decorated class in Lynchburg's history.  Ryan Cranston '08 brings back his 209 career points, 3rd on the all time list, along with his six-game winning goals in 2008.  Along with his three All-American honors, Ryan will be tough to keep off the scoreboard on Friday.

Classmates Johnny Black '08 and Taylor Stehlgens '08 were part of Cranston's career success, and it should be no different come Friday night.  Black '08 brings his Honorable Mention All-American honor, two All-ODAC selections, and 106 career goals (11th all time) back to work alongside Cranston '08.  Stehlgens '08 will be the glue keeping this line together, making the classmates tough to stop under the lights on Shellenberger once again.  Kyle McGuire '08 brings his 17 goals and 8 assists from the 2008 campaign, to support his three classmates in the midfield as well.

Classmates Andy Sinclair '03, Toby Costello '03, and Joe Matta '03 will form a midfield line just as it was back in '03.  Sinclair, Costello and Matta '03 bring their leadership and pioneering attitude to the midfield, being the first to win an ODAC title for the program in their senior year.  Matta also has the game winning goal against Salisbury in 2003 to his name, which is the last time the Hornets have topped the Seagulls.

Tom O'Neil '71 will be the eldest of the midfield group, and working alongside him will be Todd Collier '07, who brings his experience from the '05 ODAC title and NCAA tournament bid along with his work horse attitude back between the lines.  Adding Brennen Green '10 and his abilities at the face-off 'X' to this line, makes this a group that will need to play big against the face guys of the Hornets at every faceoff on Friday.

Kyle Fortman '09, Aaron Khouri '10 and Ethan Farrell '10 will make up an experienced line of midfielders for the Alums, with 179 games worth of experience between the three of them.  Farrell's '10 3rd team All-American selection and North/South All-Star game appearance, will make Khouri's big shot and Fortman's dodging abilities that much more effective.

The Alumni midfield will be rounded out by the young legs of classmates Jason Long '11 and Phil Petronelli '11.  Look for Long '11 to be an under the radar threat that the defense may lose track of with all the other fire power around him.  Petronelli '11 will rule the defensive side of the ball and then look to create transition and dish off to the scary attack group that the Alums will have threatening the Hornets defense all night long.

That attack group will be one of the best the Alums have been able to field in years.  With only three spots on the field at a time, it will be Chris Eggeling '11 (19g,15a), Brian McCulloch '07 and his All-ODAC selection in 2007, and Mikey Mundorf '09 with his 2 All-ODAC honors and North/South game selection, along with his spot at 9th on the single season assists list (29 in 2009), that give way to the three Alumni that arguably had the best careers this program has ever witnessed.

The facilitator of the unit will be Brandon Childs '04.  Childs '04 is the programs career assist leader with 102 in his career, and is 7th on the single season assists list with 31 in 2002.  He played this facilitating role on the 2003 team that won Lynchburg its first ODAC title.  In the championship game, he assisted on one goal.  It was to Lynchburg's all-time points leader, to tie the game at three.  Billy McCulloch '03 was the player on the receiving end of that pass.

Billy McCulloch '05 had 225 points in his career on 161 goals and 64 assists, most of them coming left handed.  With the programs first ODAC title coming under his senior leadership, look for #36 to find his way onto the scoring sheet more than once Friday. This may not be as easy as it was in his playing days because the third piece to this attack puzzle is Tyler Tolson '09.  Tolson '09 is the programs all time leading goal scorer, finding the back of the net an astounding 171 times in his career.  Tolson '09 was an intricate part of the '08 squad that won Lynchburg's last ODAC, with 42 goals (led the team) and 15 assists on the year.  This trio of program leaders will surely test the Lynchburg defense early and often on Friday night.

It will be a great night for the Lynchburg Lacrosse program as a whole on Friday.  The current team will be competing against the men they have to thank for the heights that this program has reached.  But it is the Alumni that will be looking for the current team to carry the torch that they once shouldered themselves; leaving the program better then they found it.  One way to do so, which the Alumni are all pulling for, is winning a National Championship.
