A Way of Life- Brian Catney '97

Lynchburg Lacrosse is a Way of Life. From the early days of the program to the most recent, each member of each graduating class can recite any number of moments in their careers that speak to this way of life. We do things a certain way around here and this way of life guides those who have come through this program in their careers and their lives. This is just a glimpse of what this way of life is all about as told by the great men of this program:

Brian Catney '97

When Coach asked for some thoughts/memories that represent the Lynchburg Lacrosse way of life, I like everyone else had 100 different great memories from my playing days. What most other alumni can't relate to is how my class ended up having 3 head coaches in 4 years. For me what exemplifies the Lynchburg Lacrosse way of life didn't really come until I had been out of school for a few years. Since I was a Senior for Coach Koudelka's first year as Head Coach, I only had the benefit of playing for him for one season. As you can imagine, being a Senior and on my third Coach, I and the other seniors had our own ideas of how things should be. As Coach Koudelka came in, there is no question he had a very hard job of instilling a whole new set of values, work ethic and tradition into a group of guys who hadn't known stability in their college careers. We had a rough start to that season, but as the spring went on and we all bought into the system we finished up with some good wins.

For me personally, I would say that the Lynchburg Lacrosse way of life isn't a moment in time, but an ongoing evolution since I graduated in 97. I've gone on to a successful business career, started a family (4 kids) and coach youth lacrosse in my free time. The values and lessons that I learned that spring have stuck with me and I find myself applying them in both the professional & personal worlds almost every day. What the incoming players & current players probably don't realize is that they are getting an incredible "education" while playing the game they love. You can't put a price on what you learn from being part of a team, and I tell parents of high-school players about Coach Koudelka all the time, especially what a great job he does developing players as well as young men.

Just because we've graduated doesn't mean we leave all those lessons we've learned behind, it just changes the way we apply them in our daily lives.
