#14 Gettysburg Holds on for 12-11 Win over #3 LC Men's Lax
GETTYSBURG, PA – The third-ranked Lynchburg College men's lacrosse nearly rallied all the way back from a six-goal second-half deficit Saturday, but #14 Gettysburg College hung on for a 12-11 victory.
The Bullets opened a 4-0 lead after the first period, with Robby Maddux posting one goal and two assists. Maddux scored to open the second period, but LC netted three-straight tallies to pull back to 5-3. Gettysburg went ahead 9-3 with four-straight goals, and led 10-4 with 2:21 left in the third before the Hornets mounted their comeback.
Lynchburg scored twice to cut the lead to 10-6 entering the fourth, and goals by Campbell Armstrong, Max Voumard and Derek Sweet brought LC to within one with 10 minutes still remaining in the game. The teams exchanged goals before GC's Bobby DeWees found the back of the net to make the score 12-10. Austin Stewart scored an unassisted goal at the 1:17 mark to cut the lead to one again and Vin Curran won the ensuing face-off for LC. Bullet keeper Jon Maddalone made a save on a Hornet attempt with 17 seconds left and Gettysburg was able to gain possession and run out the clock for the win.
Stewart had three goals and an assist for LC, while Voumard also had three scores. Sweet scored twice, Todd Galvin contributed two assists and Cullan Ganley and Curran each scored once. Adam Davey made 13 saves in net, 12 in the first three periods, Jon Gill forced three turnovers and Curran corralled six ground balls.
DeWees had four scores for Gettysburg (3-1) while Maddux had two goals, two assists and four ground balls. Nick Avedisian won 14 of his 26 face-off attempts and had a game-high 13 ground balls. Maddalone made 10 stops between the pipes for the Bullets. Each team fired 40 shots on the afternoon.
Lynchburg (4-1) looks to get back in the winning column Wednesday evening against McDaniel College (MD) at 7 p.m.
