LC to Host St. Mary's on Wednesday
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team will host St. Mary's (MD) College on Wednesday night. The NCAA first round game will start at 7 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
The Hornets will be making their second-straight trip to the national tournament, and seventh overall. It will be the third time in program history the team will go as an at-large qualifier, the last coming in 2006. On the contrary, it will be the Seahawks first appearance in the NCAA tournament. St. Mary's earned the Capital Athletic Conference's automatic bid on Sunday, after defeating Salisbury University 13-11.
The two teams have played similar foes this year, starting with the defending national champion Sea Gulls. LC defeated SU in the first game of the season 13-12, off of a late Vin Curran goal. While St. Mary's won the important rematch in the conference tourney, Salisbury defeated SMC 15-4 during the regular season. The other common opponent between the schools is Roanoke College. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) champions lost to St. Mary's in the season opener 13-12, whereas the Maroons defeated Lynchburg 9-8 in April.
In comparison of the all-conference performers, each team had three players wind up with first-team accolades. LC midfielders Curran and Max Voumard, along with defender Jon Gill were on the highest ODAC team. Curran has 23 goals and 29 points overall this year, while also serving as the primary faceoff specialist. Voumard is second on the team with 27 tallies, and tied for the team lead with 36 points. Gill, one of the top defenders in the conference, was named to the ODAC All-Tournament team for the second year in a row.
As for the Seahawks, attack Patrick Mull, midfielder Matt Tarrant, and defenseman Justin Harty were the first-team honorees. Mull sent 19 of his shots in the back of the net this year, and assisted on 37 more. Tarrant is second on the team in goals with 31. Harty led the Seahawks with 30 caused turnovers on the season.
Another interesting matchup should take place at the 'X'. Curran, who won 114 attempts with a percentage of 56.2, will take on Albert Mitchell. Mitchell, a second-team All-CAC performer, won 203 times with a winning percentage of 59.5.
The two counterparts between the pipes have similar numbers on the year. Second-team All-ODAC performer Adam Davey has started every game for the Hornets this year, while Scott Marsh has started in 12 of the 13 contests he has appeared in. Both goalies rank closely on the national scale in goals-against-average, each coming in the top-40. Davey is at 7.42 goals a game, with Marsh allowing 7.47.
