Lynchburg Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals with Comeback Victory over Maroons

SALEM, VA—The #13-ranked Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team came back in the second half for a 12-9 road victory over #7 Roanoke College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday night.

Both teams went back and forth for the duration of the first half, with Vin Curran scoring the first goal of the game a little under three minutes in to spot Lynchburg an early 1-0 lead. Curran tried to net another two minutes later, but the Roanoke keeper deflected the ball away. Derek Sweet was in the perfect spot to scoop up the deflection and give the Hornets the 2-0 advantage on his score.

Roanoke came right back with two goals in ten seconds coming off the sticks of Mike Hayden and Michael Lintner. LC's Aaron Murphy spotted the Hornets a 3-2 lead, but Joey Dishaw tied the game once more with 47 seconds remaining in the quarter.

The two teams put up a mirror image of the first quarter in the second with Lynchburg goals from Curran, Campbell Armstrong, and Austin Stewart matching tallies by Tyler McWilliams, Clarke Lewis, and Spencer Parsons for Roanoke.

Trailing 8-7 in the third quarter, Lynchburg finally made its move to take control of the game. Murphy had the ball behind the net, made a slick spin move around a defender and put the ball past Charles Pease to tie the game with 7:49 remaining in the period.

Adam Davey continued his good work in the net with three saves after the Murphy goal so that Curran could give the Hornets the 9-8 lead with nine seconds left in the third.

The Hornets scored two more times in the first 1:30 of the fourth quarter on shots from Max Voumard and Sweet to give LC a three goal lead, 11-8. Voumard added one more goal with 2:30 to play to finish the five goal scoring run for the Hornets and put the game out of reach.

Davey made 15 saves for the Hornets while Curran posted his second-straight hat trick. As a team, Lynchburg won 12-of-24 face offs and scooped 30 groundballs.

Pease made 13 saves for the Maroons (16-4) to go with two goals from McWilliams.

Lynchburg will have a rematch with Stevenson University (19-2) Wednesday in the NCAA Quarterfinals with a chance to be one of the final four teams in the nation on the line.
