SALISBURY, MD – Greg Korvin found the back of the net with 57 seconds left in overtime as fifth-ranked Salisbury University thwarted an upset bid by #11 Lynchburg College 12-11 Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.

The Hornets started strong out of the gates, taking an 8-4 lead mid-way through the second period behind two tallies from sophomore Aaron Murphy. The teams traded goals before intermission and LC went into the break ahead 9-5.

The Sea Gulls cut the lead to 9-7 with two scores, but Aaron Murphy answered for LC to push the lead back to three. Salisbury scored three-straight goals at the end of the third, two by Luke Phipps, to tie the game at 10 all. Jon Gill scored an unassisted goal with 9:31 left in the fourth, but Mike Kane netted the game-tying score from Rhett DePol 23 seconds later. Neither team could score in the final nine minutes, but LC had a good chance at the game-winner as time expired. Salisbury stopped the threat but was whistled for a one-minute cross checking penalty with four seconds left, which carried over into the four-minute extra session.

The Hornets couldn't convert on the extra-man opportunity, and had three-straight shots midway through the period. Keeper Alex Taylor made a save on the final attempt and SU gained control which lead to Korvin's game-winner.

Austin Stewart, Todd Galvin, Campbell Armstrong and Murphy each had two goals in a balanced Hornet offensive attack. Murphy added two assists, and Chris Hower and Bobby Distler had a goal apiece. Distler controlled the face-off circle, winning 14-of-23 face-off opportunities, and Adam Davey made seven saves.

Korvin and Phipps each had hat tricks for Salisbury (2-0). Brandon Kendrick had two scores and DePol and Donovan Lange had a goal and an assist.

Lynchburg opens its home schedule Saturday at 1 p.m. against Franklin & Marshall College.
