#10 Hornets Defeat #19 Generals 11-8 in Top-20 Showdown
LYNCHBURG, VA – Austin Stewart and Rob Arnold both had four points to help the #10 Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team defeat the #19 Washington and Lee Generals on Wednesday night. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory creates a logjam at the top of the standings with four teams having one loss.
Garrett Paglia opened up the scoring for the Generals at 7:58 of the first quarter. Harrison Brennan then took the ensuing faceoff, threw a nice fake, and connected on his shot to tie the game at one. Stewart then notched his first of the game off a pass from Todd Galvin to give LC the lead. W&L faceoff man Jared Mitchell copied Brennan following Stewart's first, and tied the game at 5:46. Stout defense was the story the rest of the quarter until Cam Lewis tallied his first of the night to give the Generals the lead back.
The Hornets took control of the game in the second quarter scoring three while shutting Washington and Lee out. Arnold ripped a shot into the back of the net 50 seconds into the second quarter to tie the game once more. Campbell Armstrong scored his only goal on the night and then Arnold scored with three seconds left to give LC a 5-3 lead at the intermission.
Once again, the defenses controlled the early play of the third period. Then Jack Reuter broke the stalemate at 7:52. Stewart then completed his hat trick over the next three minutes. He scored off a pass from Cole Barrett on a fast break, and then connected with Aaron Murphy at 4:54 for the 7-4 advantage. Christian Zanetis fired his shot in the back of the net at 3:55 to cut the deficit to two.
In the fourth, Colin Fraser was assessed two one-minute penalties at 12:26. W&L was successful in killing off the first penalty, but were not as lucky on the second. Murphy scored off a pass from Arnold with less than a minute remaining in the second penalty. The Generals answered once again as Cameron Dabir scored at 10:17, but that would be as close as it would get. Stewart notched his fourth of the night and David Alyanakian scored from distance to put the lead at 10-6. Will Douthat quickly cut the lead again, but Washington and Lee struggled to get past the stingy Hornet defense until 2:58 when Tyler Goldman took Lewis' pass and gave Washington and Lee some hope. The Hornets passed around the ball and received another man-up situation. Arnold then scored at 0:34 with an open net to finish off the scoring.
Paglia led Washington and Lee (8-5 overall, 5-1 ODAC) with four groundballs and three caused turnovers to go along with his opening goal. The Generals outshot the Hornets in the game 42-34, but LC had five more on net (19-14). Andrew Fawkes made six saves and picked up four groundballs in the win. Jon Gill also scooped up four groundballs and caused two turnovers.
Lynchburg (10-4, 5-1) will be back at home on Saturday for Senior Night. The Hornets will take on Randolph- Macon College (7-6, 3-3) and honor 11 seniors prior to the action, with the first faceoff set for 7 p.m.
