Releford and Venegas Capture Summer Soccer Championship

LYNCHBURG, VA – Lynchburg College men's soccer seniors Michael Releford and Michael Venegas competed with RVA FC this summer, capturing the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) Championship following an undefeated season and a title-game victory over Sonoma County (12-1-3).

The NPSL is made up of 57 teams stretching from Connecticut, down to Texas, and as far west as California and is considered one of the top amateur entities in the United States.

Releford and Venegas were two of only several Division III players on RVA (10-0-2), which is made up of a mix of college players, professionals, and ex-professionals.

"We're not only college-based players, we can also have pros or ex-pros," head coach Grover Gibson said. However, just as with the college players who participate, no player on RVA FC receives payment for playing."

RVA featured players from many prominent programs in the state of Virginia including the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, James Madison University, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

"My goal is to really have the top players that will eventually be drafted," Gibson added.

The Lynchburg men's soccer team plays its first match Friday, August 30 at 5 p.m. against Richard Stockton College in the Roanoke College Tournament.
