Hornet Men's Soccer Battles to OT, Lose Close One to Ospreys

ROANOKE, VA – Chris Katona netted the game-winning goal in the 95th minute of overtime, edging Richard Stockton University (NJ) over Lynchburg College 2-1 in non-conference play at the Roanoke College Tournament.

The Ospreys of Richard Stockton got on the board first with a break-away goal from Anthony Colofranson at 26:57 in the first half. Although the Hornets were down, the defense stepped up to keep the score at 1-0 at the end of the first half.

Going into the second half, the defensive battle continued. Both teams were struggling to find the back of the net until Lynchburg stepped up at the end of the half. LC tied the game at 1-1 late in the game with a header from junior Josh Hinkle off of a corner kick from senior Alex Schrum at 84:12. Then senior keeper Jonathan Sheffield made a clutch save off of a shot from Chris Katona with two minutes left in the period to hold off the Ospreys and send the match to overtime.

Richard Stockton took advantage with a game-winning goal into the left side of the net from Katona.

Sheffield recorded six saves in the match for the Hornets, while Bob Millar had six saves as well for the Ospreys. LC outshot Richard Stockton 13-10.

The Hornet men (0-1) will compete Saturday in the Roanoke Tournament in another non-conference matchup against Averett University at 5 p.m.
