John Carroll Escapes with 1-0 Win over the Hornets
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Blue Streaks of John Carroll University escaped with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Lynchburg College men's soccer team on Saturday in the first round of the 2013 Shellenberger Classic.
John Carroll capitalized early, with Brian Potocnik scoring the only goal of the game from an assist by Mariusz Trzeciak at 8:17 in the first half. The Hornets had a chance to tie the game at 26:50 in the first when senior Chaz Ashton fired a shot that glanced off the right post. Both teams clamped down for the rest of the game, creating a defensive battle, while not allowing any more goals.
Senior Jonathan Sheffield saved eight balls and played all 90 minutes in goal for the Hornets, while Zach Fehrenbach recorded three saves for John Carroll.
The Hornet men (0-2) will compete in the second round of the 2013 Shellenberger Classic on Sunday when they will compete against Marymount (Va.) at 3:30 p.m. in non-conference play.
