Hornets Score Early; Hang on to Defeat Quakers 1-0
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's soccer team faced off against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Guilford College on Wednesday at home and won 1-0.
LC found the back of the net early, when sophomore Tim Clancy scored a goal off of a rare double assist from junior Luke Moore and sophomore Earl Rimbey just 5:33 into the game. The rest of the half consisted of a strong defensive effort on both sides, but the Hornets carried an 11-3 shot advantage going into the second half.
With the keeper out of the net for Guilford, Lynchburg had a chance to increase its lead early in the second half after senior Michael Venegas directed a shot at the goal, only to be stopped by Quaker defender Jake Elsey.
Guilford was able to improve its shot total in the second half and threatened to tie the game late, but the Hornets would maintain their 1-0 lead to win the game.
Senior Jonathan Sheffield played all 90 minutes in goal for Lynchburg, allowing no goals and saving four balls. Michael MacVane recorded eight saves at the goalie spot for Guilford (4-6-1/2-4 ODAC). LC had a 24-12 shot advantage and led in corner kicks 5-2.
The Hornet men (5-4-2/3-1-1 ODAC) will travel to compete against Bridgewater College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in another ODAC matchup.
