Hornets Prevail in Thriller; Defeat #15 WildCats 3-2
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's soccer team scored three times to take down #15 in the nation Randolph College 3-2 on Wednesday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
The Hornets capitalized early when sophomore Tim Clancy lofted the ball over Randolph keeper Carter Smith, placing it in the back of the net off of an assist by junior Luke Moore at 15:59. Just under three minutes later, LC increased its lead to 2-0 after Moore scored a breakaway goal from an assist by junior Trevor Davis. Lynchburg scored once more in the first, at 36:02, on a penalty kick from senior Michael Venegas, upping the lead to 3-0. Even though the Hornet defense was relentless, Randolph would not go scoreless in the first half. Joe Skaja scored a goal off of an assist by Troy Jurney, putting the score at 3-1 at the end of the half.
The Hornet defense came out strong at the beginning of the second half, playing keep-away from the WildCat offense. Despite the strong defensive effort by Lynchburg, Randolph found a way to score again when Jurney scored from a pass across the front of the net by John Adams. LC played great defense during the last 20:00 of the game, making several clutch clears to slow down Randolph's offensive attack. The WildCats had a good opportunity to score with about two minutes left in the match, but senior Alex Schrum stepped in front to block Corey Sindle's shot from five yards out. Lynchburg would keep the ball away from Randolph for the last minute, to take the 3-2 victory.
Senior Jonathan Sheffield played all 90 minutes and recorded seven saves for the Hornets. Smith had two saves for Randolph (13-1-1/8-1 ODAC). The WildCats led in the shot column 25-11 and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hornet men (8-5-2/6-2-1) will look to continue their win streak when they will travel to face ODAC opponent Emory & Henry College on Saturday, October 26 at 7 p.m.
