VWC Defeats LC 4-2 in ODAC Semis
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Lynchburg College men's soccer team faced off against Virginia Wesleyan College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament semifinals on Wednesday night and lost 4-2.
The Marlins capitalized early in the first half when Josh Kemp scored a goal from 20 yards out at 11:13. The Hornets tied the match at 1-1 about 20 minutes later when sophomore Tim Clancy tapped the ball in the back of the net from five yards out. At 39:05, Lynchburg got on the board again after senior Michael Venegas fired in a goal off of an assist by freshman Ben Grossfuss, making the score 2-1.
VWC did not waste any time coming out of the gate in the second when Isaac Arrington scored just 10 seconds in to even the score at 2-2. Just 13 minutes later, the Marlins took the lead when Arrington scored his second goal of the night from Kemp. Virginia Wesleyan put the final nail in the coffin at 85:27 when Travis Walke scored a goal that was assisted by Zach Landis to push the lead to 4-2.
Senior Jonathan Sheffield played all 90 minutes in goal and saved six balls for the Hornets, while Connor Kirkham recorded four saves for the Marlins. VWC led in shot totals 22-9 and also had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hornets end their season with an 11-6-2 record after winning five games in a row and Virginia Wesleyan (15-4-1) will move on to face Randolph College in the ODAC tournament Final on Saturday.
