Men's soccer to host first- and second-round NCAA matches

Abibi Osman and Ryan Pikunas celebrate a goal.

Lynchburg, Va. -- Lynchburg College's men's soccer team will get to stay home for the first weekend of the NCAA Division III tournament, its members found out Monday afternoon.

The Hornets will also face a familiar foe.

No. 15-ranked Lynchburg (17-1-2) will play host to Penn State-Abington (15-6), champions of the North Eastern Athletic Conference, Saturday on Shellenberger Field at 5 p.m. Centennial Conference champ Dickinson (11-6-3) will face Emory University (12-5-1) in the other first-round match, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The winners will play Sunday at 7 p.m. on Shellenberger.

Lynchburg enters the tournament on a 15-match unbeaten streak, and the Hornets have shut out 11 of their opponents in that time. Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions for the 16th time, 2017 will be LC's 16th trip to the NCAA tournament. The Hornets won a tournament game a season ago, dispatching John Carroll, 4-2, in the first round at home.

PSU-Abington already made one trip to Virginia this year, heading to Salem for the Roanoke College Kick-off. Lynchburg beat the Nittany Lions, 4-0, in a Sept. 10 match in that tournament.
