Salem, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team pulled out a season-opening victory in the All Sports Cafe Roanoke Invitational, defeating Averett, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Roanoke College.
Sophomore forward Abibi Osman (Charlottesville, Va.) drew the only blood in the match, firing an unassisted goal in the 10th minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars took the first shot of the game, a second-minute heave that forced Lynchburg's senior goalkeeper Dylan McLaurin (Stafford, Va.) to make his only save of the evening.
Lynchburg seized momentum after that, earning a pair of corner kicks in the early minutes and, in the 10th, taking the lead on Osman's strike.
The Hornets didn't let off the pedal the rest of the way. Senior midfielder Dan Friedberg (Blacksburg, Va.) recorded a game-high five shots, three of them on goal, and Lynchburg carried advantages in shots (17-1) and corner kicks (16-3).
Lynchburg will trek back to Salem Saturday, Sept. 1 to continue the All Sports Cafe Roanoke Invitational. The Hornets will take on Oberlin at 5 p.m. at Roanoke's Kerr Stadium.
