Men's soccer victorious on Osman's goal

Salem, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team pulled out a season-opening victory in the All Sports Cafe Roanoke Invitational, defeating Averett, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Roanoke College.

Sophomore forward Abibi Osman (Charlottesville, Va.) drew the only blood in the match, firing an unassisted goal in the 10th minute.

  • The Cougars took the first shot of the game, a second-minute heave that forced Lynchburg's senior goalkeeper Dylan McLaurin (Stafford, Va.) to make his only save of the evening.

  • Lynchburg seized momentum after that, earning a pair of corner kicks in the early minutes and, in the 10th, taking the lead on Osman's strike.

  • The Hornets didn't let off the pedal the rest of the way. Senior midfielder Dan Friedberg (Blacksburg, Va.) recorded a game-high five shots, three of them on goal, and Lynchburg carried advantages in shots (17-1) and corner kicks (16-3).



Lynchburg will trek back to Salem Saturday, Sept. 1 to continue the All Sports Cafe Roanoke Invitational. The Hornets will take on Oberlin at 5 p.m. at Roanoke's Kerr Stadium.
