Men's Tennis Serves up Solid Weekend at ITAs
The Lynchburg College men's tennis team got the fall season started on a positive note at the ITAs at Mary Washington this past weekend.
The top of the ladder provided a lot of spark over the weekend. Sophomore Matt Karvelas took down Virginia Wesleyan's Spencer Bullock 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 in three sets to advance out of the first round. He went on to take a 5-7, 6-1 (7) victory against Andrew Gear from St. Mary's.
Senior Owen Landon won his first match 6-2, 6-2 against Drew Hubble from Bridgewater College. Landon followed it up with a third set victory against Randolph-Macon's 4-6, 6-1 (8). Senior Cody Crampton defeated Ferrum's Connor Moncure in the Round of 16 in a close 8-6 match. Crampton and Landon also teamed up and played doubles together to defeat Guzzone/Paulishak from St. Mary's 9-7.
Senior Derek Kegerreis had a great weekend winning his draw. He defeated Alejandro Diaz 8-6 in the Round of 16 before moving past Dustin DeMelo from Shenandoah 8-1 in the quarterfinals. He played Matt Rosenkrantz from York College in the semifinals, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. Kegerreis came back from one set down for the second straight round to beat Houghton Flanagan from Hampden-Sydney 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the finals.
Freshman Tyler Long won 8-5 in the round of 16 against Dan McLaughlin from Grove City College. He won his quarterfinals match against Ben Bowles from Bridgewater College 8-3 while fellow freshman Josh Johnson defeated Taylor Napier from Ferrum College 8-5 in the Round of 16. The duo paired up against Howell/Raddi from Penn State Abington winning their semifinal match 9-8 (5). They then cruised through the finals to win the B5 doubles flight with an 8-2 win against Daskalov/Patel from Ferrum College.
The next home match will be against Southern Virginia University for both the men's and women's teams Thursday, October 4th at the LC Courts, time to be announced.
