LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's and women's track and field teams competed in the 2012 Dr. Jack M. Toms Open on Saturday, hosted by Lynchburg College. Both teams performed strongly with the women's team placing third and the men's team placing second overall.

On the women's side, Freshman Aleshia Washington took first in the long jump with a distance of 5.19m and placed seventh in the triple jump and 100-meter dash with a distance of 10.18m and time of 12.92 seconds respectively. Leah Heal placed second in the javelin throw with a distance of 35.08m. Kori Penick finished first in the shot put throwing 12.07m and sixth in the discus throw with a heave of 31.83m. Christina Washington placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.43. Jill Dziewisz, Katie Kline and Kristen Chiovari placed third, fifth and seventh with heights of 2.82m, 2.67m, and 2.37m in pole vault. The 4x400m relay team made up of Jasmyne Johnson, Tracy Estelus, Naomi Tice and Christina Washington placed second with a time of 4:05.15.

On the men's side, Freshman Jared Bloomquist tied for first in the high jump with a height of 2.01m.  Lawrence Minor placed second in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:00.87. Greg Wilson and Eric Van Dunk placed first and second in the shot put with a distance of 14.86m and 14.25m. Ralph Davis, Wilson, and Gordon Merck finished second, fifth, and sixth in the hammer throw with distances of 45.71m, 41.87m, and 41.27m. Wilson also finished second in the discus throw with a throw of 41.67m. Daniel Cutright and Brandon Demers placed third and fifth in the 3000m steeple chase running 9:39.44 and 9:47.23.  Nathan Curtis and Eric O'Connor placed third and fourth in the pole vault with a height of 4.22m and 3.97m.

Coach Doug Thomasey said, "It takes a lot to put on a meet and we had the highest turnout in five years of 17 teams.  It is very satisfying as a coach to put on a meet and see your athletes succeed."

The Lynchburg College track and field teams will travel to Lexington, VA for the Washington and Lee and VMI Track Carnival.
