First Day of ODAC's Complete; Men currently First and Women in Fifth
LYNCHBURG, VA – With the first day down of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships complete, the Lynchburg College men's squad presently sits in first place, with the Hornets in fifth on the women's side.
For the men, Daniel Cutright took home the silver in the 3000 meter steeple chase, with a time of 9:32.73. Cutright, along with the other top four finishers broke the previous ODAC record, which was set last year by Cutright. Also on the distance side, Brian Robinson earned points for the Hornets with a fifth-place finish in the 10,000 meter race.
LC swept the high jump as James Bell took the gold at 6'4.77", Jared Bloomquist was the runner-up at 6'3.95" , and Tristan Boysaw finished third in the event, reaching a height of 6'2.4". Zachary Kezar earned the silver in the long jump, reaching a distance of 21'9.81".
The throwers got off to another dominating start at the ODACs. In the hammer throw, LC had the top three spots. Ralph Davis won the event with a distance of 166'3.27". Gordon Merck took second in the event, and Greg Wilson finished with the bronze, with throws of 148'6.28" and 141'0.91" respectively. Wilson then went out and won the shot put, heaving the shot 47'1.74". Eric Van Dunk was right behind Wilson, taking the silver, with a throw of 45'2.91".
For the women, Kori Penick continued her successful first season at Lynchburg, finishing third in the shot put with a distance of 40'8.58". Aleshia Washington won ten points for the Hornets, after winning the long jump, leaping a distance of 17'1.9". Candice Hairston finished fourth garnering points for LC in the event.
The men go into the last day of the meet with a 66-point lead over the next closest team. The women are in the mix, only 33 points behind the leader, Roanoke College. With several excellent qualifying efforts on both the men's and women's side, and many other events to take place, LC sits in good position for the remainder of the championships. Events on Saturday will begin at 9 a.m. at Lynchburg College.
