Q and A with Hornet of the Week Daniel Shannon

The Lynchburg College athletic department each week showcases a question and answer feature with our Hornet of the Week. The 20th student-athlete selected this year is men's track and field sophomore Daniel Shannon.

Shannon put his name on the Old Dominion Athletic Conference leaderboard this past weekend at the Liberty Open. The sophomore vaulted 13' 9.25" in the pole vault, best in the ODAC this season. That total was the best Division III mark at the meet and was just a half inch off his career mark of 13' 9.75" set last year in the ODAC Outdoor Championships.

You had a good showing at the Liberty Open, vaulting 13' 9.25", the top result in the ODAC so far this season. How did it feel to post that result and be on top of the conference?

I was happy with my performance and I think it was a great start to the season. It's still early in the year though and I have a lot of work to do if I still want to be leading the conference after our championship meet in a few weeks.

What is your favorite thing about Lynchburg men's track and field?

Many of my best friends are on the track team. I already have a lot of great memories of different meets and experiences with my teammates.

What do you like most about Lynchburg College?

It's not often that I see an unfamiliar face on campus. It makes me feel much closer to my classmates and fellow students.

In your mind, what does it mean to be a student-athlete and how has Lynchburg helped you out?

Being a student-athlete is just one of many ways to be involved in multiple areas at Lynchburg College. Learning to apply some of the same focus and work ethic I use in track to my major has helped me in many of my classes.
