LC Softball Splits Doubleheader with Greensboro to Open 2012 Season
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team opened its 2012 season Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader split with visiting Greensboro College in non-conference play on Aubrey Moon Field.
Freshman Kaitlyn Morris earned a victory in her first collegiate game in the opener, a 4-1 Hornet win. She allowed six hits and two walks with two strikeouts, settling down after giving up her only run of the contest in the first frame, a home run from Rebecca Pink.
LC hammered out four runs in the bottom of the first, with freshman Jessi Hall leading off with a double. Melanie Tenney reached on an error and Amber Ingram doubled to right center to plate Hall and Tenney. Senior backstop Meagan Fredenberg followed with a two-run home run to right center, and neither team would score again in the first game. The Pride had two runners on with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Morris induced a groundout to complete the game.
Fredenberg was 2-2 and also walked. Pink finished 3-4 with a home run and a double.
Greensboro broke open a 1-1 tie in the second game with nine runs in the fourth inning and went on for a 10-1 victory in five innings. Kelsey Sanfilippo and Hannah Pennell combined to throw a one-hitter with two walks and five strikeouts for GC. Brittany Evans went 3-3 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI, and Kanisha Fogg, Jackie Nicholson and Hayley Nicks each had two hits.
The Hornets (1-1) host Averett University Saturday at 1 p.m. for another non-conference doubleheader.
