Hornet Softball Opens ODAC Slate with Split at Randolph
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader at Randolph College Thursday, the first conference games of the season for both squads.
The Hornets rallied from three runs down to take the opener 6-4. After a Hornet run in the first, the WildCats answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. The Hornets plated two runs in the top of the second, thanks to a two-RBI single from senior Meagan Fredenberg. The game remained 4-3 until the Hornets struck again in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Melanie Tenney led off with a single, moved to third on an error and scored on a single from freshman Amber Ingram. Sophomore Cassie Phillips drove in two runs with a two-out single, which proved to be the game-winning hit.
LC freshman pitcher Hope Johnson came in with one out in the first and finished the contest. She scattered eight hits and allowed no runs and no walks en route to the victory. Lynchburg had 13 hits and five Hornets had multiple hits: Fredenberg, Ingram, Jessi Hall, Skylar Seals and Sarah Smith. Ashley Gardner went 4-4 for Randolph.
Jessica Sanabria threw a complete-game shutout for Randolph in the nightcap, an 8-0 RC victory in five innings. Smith, Rachel Baldwin and Michaela Munday each had hits for LC, while Lauren Stevenson was 3-4 for the Wildcats (12-8/1-1).
The Hornets (8-10/1-1 ODAC) travel to Ferrum College for a non-conference doubleheader Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
