CNU Sweeps DH at Lynchburg
LYNCHBURG, VA - The 15th-ranked Christopher Newport University softball team swept a pair of games against Lynchburg College Tuesday afternoon, by scores of 7-2 and 8-0 (in six innings) in non-conference play.
CNU exploded for five runs in the top of the second inning of the first game, capped by a three-run home run from Kristen Olsen. The Hornets scored one in the bottom of the frame, as freshman Amber Ingram hit a sacrifice fly to score fellow freshman Kacey Clary. CNU added an insurance tally in the fifth as Jennifer Falin hit a run-scoring single and LC answered with a run off a Captain throwing error. CNU tacked on another run in the top of the seventh to push the lead to five.
Chelsea Mitchell was 3-4 for CNU, while Olsen had two hits. Krista Townsend earned a complete-game victory in the circle, allowing only eight hits, one walk and one earned run.
In the nightcap, the Captains scored twice in the second inning and plated four runs in the third, aided by a three-run home run from Rachel Houff. Sabrina Hill and Mitchell added RBI singles in the sixth to end the scoring. Jessi Hall, Ingram, Amber Sulter, Skylar Seals and Tenney all had hits for LC.
Melanie Hazelwood threw a complete-game shutout in the second game, giving up five hits and one walk while striking out four batters.
CNU improves to 19-5 overall. The Hornets (10-12) host Emory & Henry College Saturday at 2 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.
