Hornets Sweep Doubleheader Against Emory & Henry

LYNCHBURG, VA – Freshman Hope Johnson threw a no-hitter in the first game Saturday afternoon as the Lynchburg College softball team swept visiting Emory & Henry College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader. LC won the first game 15-0 in five innings and 4-3 in the second contest.

Johnson was dominant en route to her third collegiate victory in the opener. She struck out six Wasps, walked just two and hit one batter, facing just one batter over the minimum.

The Hornets started off the first game with four runs in the first inning. Sophomore Melanie Tenney led off with a single and advanced to second after an error on the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Senior shortstop Taylor Walker ripped a double to left center field to plate both runners and freshman Amber Ingram followed with a two-run  home run to centerfield. Ingram singled in another run in the bottom of the second for a 5-0 LC edge. Two RBI groundouts and a run-scoring single from senior Sarah Smith netted three runs for Lynchburg in the third. LC poured on seven runs in the fourth to put the game away.

Hall, Walker, Ingram, sophomore Michaela Munday and Smith all had two hits for LC, which had 16 hits in just four innings at the plate. Walker had four RBI while Ingram drove in three runners.

In the nightcap, E&H scored a run in the top of the first after an RBI single from pitcher Jennifer True. Taylor Walker grounded out in the bottom of the third to score Tenney and tie the game at one all. Tenney ripped a double down the left field line in the fifth to score another run and give the Hornets the lead. Ingram hit an infield single to plate Tenney and put LC ahead 3-1.

The Wasps were down to their last strike in the top of the seventh inning when Jelisa McFadden belted a two-home run to center field. With the score tied, Tenney led off the bottom of the inning with a single, advanced to second on sacrifice bunt by freshman Jessi Hall and to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Walker hit a grounder to the shortstop who made the throw to first for the out. Tenney bolted for home on the throw and slid underneath the tag to score the winning run.

Freshman Kaitlyn Morris worked all seven innings for the win, allowing four hits and no walks. True was effective in her six and two-thirds innings for E&H (8-14/1-5 ODAC), allowing five hits, three walks and one earned run.

The Hornets (12-12/3-1 ODAC) host Eastern Mennonite University Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
