Lynchburg Softball Pulls Off Sweep of Eastern Mennonite in Doubleheader

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team pulled of an impressive doubleheader on Sunday, defeating Eastern Mennonite 11-10 in the first game and winning the second 6-4 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

Lynchburg won the first game in dramatic fashion with seven runs in the seventh inning, taking the game on a walk-off single from freshman Amber Ingram.

Eastern Mennonite though, started the game off with three runs in the top of the first. LC answered with two runs in the bottom of third. Ingram singled in sophomore Melanie Tenney while Ingram came around home off an EMU error.

With two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, the Royals led 6-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth when Lynchburg posted two runs. Freshman Jessi Hall scored on a pair of errors from the Royals while freshman Rachel Baldwin grounded into second scoring senior Taylor Walker.

EMU registered three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh, leading to a dramatic seventh inning for Lynchburg. Freshman Skyler Seals knocked in one with the bases loaded and was followed by freshman Kacey Clary who singled in two, making the score 10-7. Senior Sarah Smith and Tenney both brought a run home, setting it up for Ingram with the bases loaded and two outs.

Ingram singled to right center scoring Hall and Tenney for the 11-10 victory. Freshman Hope Johnson pitched four innings, before giving way to Ingram and sophomore Cassie Phillips who earned the win.

Lisa Lee took the loss for the Royals. Courtney Allman, Sara Jenkins and Jordan Aylor each had two RBI a piece.

The second game proved to be a closer matchup. EMU drew first blood with a run in the third inning.

Lynchburg scored twice in the bottom of the fourth off a two-run homer from Seals. The Hornets expanded the lead with two more runs in the fifth off an RBI-single from Baldwin and freshman Amber Sulter.

With a 4-1 lead in the sixth, the Royals tallied three runs in the frame, knotting the game up at four.

Once again, LC's offense struck at the right time. Walker doubled to centerfield in the bottom of the sixth to give Lynchburg the eventual 6-4 win.

Freshman Kaitlyn Morris pitched the complete game, striking out eight while only giving up one run.

Aylor got the start in the circle for EMU (19-5/3-3 ODAC), taking the loss.

Lynchburg (14-12/5-1 ODAC) hosts Bridgewater College on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. on Moon Field.
