Hornet Softball Takes Two of Three Games at Methodist Tourney
FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Lynchburg College softball team finally got to compete at the Methodist University Early Bird Tournament, and took two of three games on Sunday in non-conference contests. The tournament was originally slated to begin Friday and end Saturday, and then got pushed back to Saturday and Sunday due to wet conditions. A final condensed version of competition was played today.
The Hornets began the day with a 9-0 victory over Case Western Reserve University (OH) in six innings. Sophomore Hope Johnson threw a complete-game four-hitter, walking none while striking out eight. Junior Melanie Tenney was a perfect 3-3 with two RBI and a walk, while junior Nicole Shipp was 2-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Lynchburg defeated Methodist 6-2 in nine innings in the second game. The Hornets scored five runs in the final frame, as sophomore Lexi Meeker ripped a bases-clearing double to end the scoring. Sophomore Jessi Hall was 3-5 with an RBI single and junior Michaela Munday was 2-3 with two runs scored. Johnson threw the last three innings out of the bullpen to pick up her second win of the day. Sophomore Elizabeth Fioretti started in the circle and was effective for six innings, giving up just one run on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Stevenson University scored six runs in the fifth inning and earned a 6-4 win over LC in the finale. Tenney was 2-3 and sophomore Kasey Clary was 2-2. Hall hit a triple and scored a run.
The Hornets (3-2) are off until next Tuesday, March 5, when they host Ferrum College in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
