Lynchburg Sweep Doubleheader against Rutgers-Newark
SALISBURY, MD – The Lynchburg College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader Saturday against Rutgers-Newark (NJ) 9-5 and 15-5 in five innings.
LC was down 5-0 after the Scarlet Raiders posted five runs in the top of the third in the opener. The Hornets trimmed the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third on a Danielle Powell single to score Melanie Tenney. Lynchburg scored five runs in the fifth, as Skylar Seals and Kayla St. John each had two-run singles in the frame. Tenney drilled a three-run home run to left-center in the sixth to end the scoring.
Elizabeth Fioretti threw 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win, allowing five hits while striking out three. Tenney scored three runs and three RBI, while St. John and Nicole Shipp each had two hits. Tonianna Donde had three hits and a triple for Rutgers-Newark, while Vannessa Romero had a two-run home run.
LC jumped out early in the second game, scoring eight runs in the second inning and four in the third. Tenney and Powell had almost identical lines: each went 3-5 with a double, a home run and five RBI, and combined for five runs. Shipp, Jessi Hall, Lauren Smith and Nicole Donohue had two hits apiece, and Amber Ingram had a two-run triple. Ingram also earned the win in the pitching circle.
Romero was 3-3 for Rutgers-Newark (0-4).
The Hornets (9-1) will square off with Salisbury Sunday at noon in another non-conference twin-bill.
