LC Sweeps Shenandoah in ODAC Opener
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Shenandoah University by scores of 3-2 and 7-1.
In the opener, the Hornets got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third off the bat of Melanie Tenney, as the senior second baseman blasted a solo home run over the center field fence. Lynchburg plated two more runs in the fourth, one on a sacrifice fly from Nicole Riley and one on a home run by Amber Ingram. Lindsay Corbin lofted a solo home run for SU in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1. Corbin belted another long ball in the top of the seventh to make it a one-run game, but Hope Johnson recorded the last two outs to earn her first save of the season.
Elizabeth Fioretti tossed 4 1/3 innings in a starting role to post the win, allowing just three hits and one walk, while Tenney went 3-3 and St. John had two hits. Corbin scattered eight hits in the circle for Shenandoah.
Two Shenandoah miscues allowed two LC runs to cross the plate in the first inning of the nightcap. Danielle Powell singled to score Jessi Hall in the third and a two-run homer from Ingram in the fourth made the score 5-0. Skylar Seals and Logan Walker hit RBI singles in the fifth to extend the lead by two more runs. Corbin hit her third home run of the day in the sixth inning for Shenandoah, providing all three of SU's runs on the day via the four-bagger.
Seals was 3-3 with two RBI in game two and Ingram provided a spark at the plate and in the circle. She worked all seven innings for the complete-game victory, allowing eight hits and three walks. Heather Sink had two base hits for Shenandoah (1-10/0-4 ODAC).
