LYNCHBURG, VA – Lynchburg College's Hope Johnson and Danielle Powell had the opportunity to show off their skills Friday against the USA National Softball Team, and were able to impress.

The two Hornets were a part of a Central Virginia All-Star Team that squared off with Team USA in a doubleheader exhibition at Lynchburg's City Stadium. Lynchburg was the first stop for the national team in a series of exhibitions across the nation. Liberty University head coach Dot Richardson served as the coach for the Central Virginia All-Star Team.

Johnson tossed four innings against the national team, comprised of the best current and former Division I players in the country. She allowed just two earned runs over that span, working the last two innings of game one and the first three innings of the nightcap.

Powell played both in right field and third base in the doubleheader. She displayed her strong arm in the field and hit the ball hard against the best pitchers in the nation.

"It was very exciting to have the USA team in town and playing at City Stadium on Friday," said LC head softball coach Dawn Simmons. "It was also exciting to see how many people in the community came out to support the event. I am very pleased that Danielle and Hope were picked to play on the All-Star team. I am also very proud of the way they played and represented themselves as well as Lynchburg College and our softball program.  I think it goes to show you that no matter what level you play at, hard work, dedication and commitment can get you a long way."

Both Johnson and Powell return to a Hornet team that advanced into the NCAA Division III Tournament this spring. Johnson, a rising senior, earned second-team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference accolades this year in the circle. Powell will be a junior in 2015 and took home first-team All-State and third-team All-Region honors at season's end.

Team USA's next stop is in Morgantown, WV July 2-3.
